A small group of dedicated volunteers founded the Food Bank of North Alabama in 1984 by borrowing a desk from the Huntsville Madison County Senior Center and calling local farmers.
We initially focused solely on feeding neighbors in need, but the number of residents who couldn’t afford to buy enough food to eat only grew. As a result, we broadened our goal and are now tackling hunger in two ways.
We feed the hungry today while also developing solutions to end hunger tomorrow.
This mission is accomplished by supplying 13 million pounds of food per year to a network of over 200 food pantries, shelters, and children’s programs in 11 counties in North Alabama. Every year, we feed over 80,000 people who are at risk of going hungry.
We also address the underlying causes of hunger through large-scale collaborations and local food initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and healthy food access throughout our region.
