Helping Mamas was founded by a social worker who identified a service gap.

There was no organized effort to collect and distribute essential baby items or period products to needy women and children.
She knew something needed to be done after seeing moms use plastic grocery bags for diapers or washout and reuse disposable diapers.

There are no public assistance programs that cover diapers or menstrual products.Parents were absent from work due to diaper shortages, babies were suffering from severe diaper rash infections, and teen girls were missing a week of school each month due to a lack of period products.

Jamie Lackey founded Helping Mamas in her garage, combining her love of motherhood and social work. Collecting baby supplies from friends and family and distributing them to social workers who serve women and children. By 2018, Helping Mamas had expanded into the 9,000 square foot building where we now operate.

Every year, nearly 60,000 children are served, and 2 million essential items are distributed to the community. Helping Mamas has expanded to fight diaper need and period poverty throughout Georgia and Knoxville, Tennessee.
