The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission is to be “a network of friends inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to those in need.”

Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (also known as “Vincentians”) are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by providing one-on-one service to their neighbors in need. Our members are of all ages, races, and income levels, and they are all blessed with the awareness that the blessings of time, talent, and treasure are to be shared with neighbors in need.

The National Council of the United States is a member of an international society of friends united by a spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing, which is fostered by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings, and adherence to a basic Rule.

The National Council, in support of the local Councils and Conferences, provides Vincentians throughout the United States with training, education, spiritual formation, and financial assistance as they assist millions of neighbors in need.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has grown to 800,000 members in over 150 countries and 1,500,000 volunteers since its founding in Paris in 1833. Vincentians recognize that serving a neighbor in need is an encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ, and they are aware that poverty, suffering, and loneliness exist in our communities for millions of people.

As a result, we work with everyone who wants to alleviate poverty and address its root causes.

The work of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is unique in that Vincentians provide tangible assistance to those in need on a one-on-one basis. This assistance can take the form of intervention, consultation, or direct financial or in-kind assistance.

One fundamental principle of the Society’s work is to provide assistance while respecting the confidentiality and dignity of our neighbors in need. Furthermore, the Society recognizes that it must act as an advocate for those who are marginalized or have no voice.

Every year, Vincentians serve over 5 million people in the United States.

The Society accepts no charitable work.
“Charity is infinitely inventive,” says our patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
