When we realized that no safety-net program covered diapers for those in need, we founded the Utah Diaper Bank in 2013.
Our community desperately needed a systematic approach to collecting and distributing diapers. Local television and radio stations broadcast an urgent need for diapers at a crisis nursery in 2011, which was unable to accept children due to a lack of diapers.
We began personally donating diapers to shelters over the next two years, but in 2012, local television stations broadcasted an urgent need for diapers once more. We resolved to take action in response to this second call for assistance.
We discovered that, while there was a loosely organized network of diaper banks in thirty-two states, Utah was not one of them. Utah should have its own organized diaper bank, we decided.
The Utah Diaper Bank, which opened its doors in March 2013, has grown from distributing 11,000 diapers in its first year to shipping over 900,000 diapers by 2021, thanks to the generosity of the community. We now distribute 75,000 diapers per month on average.
The diaper bank movement started in 1994, when a small consulting firm decided to help their local community during the holiday season. Resolve Inc., based in Tucson, Arizona, started their charitable efforts by collecting diapers for a local crisis nursery. Their annual diaper collection tradition continued, and only five years later, they had collected 300,000 diapers for 30 different organizations.
